SHEILA MILLWARD
An Emotional Response to Terezin
Exhibition runs 17th January to 29th January 2012
Private View Tuesday
17th January 7-9pm
With an emotional and powerful concept, Sheila Millward holds her first exhibition at Gallery150
After visiting synagogues and graveyards in the Jewish Quarter of Prague in 1994, Sheila found herself unexpectingly visiting Terezin, also known as Theresienstadt, the concentration camp.
During Sheila’s visit, an overriding importance become apparent with the experience of walking through the Gestapo prision and becoming familiar with seemingly a “normal town”. The experience as a whole brought about the touring exhibition - “An Emotional Response to Terezin”.
With this series of work, you can’t help but feel a sense of “displacement”, formulated by the stylistic approach Sheila has taken, encouraging fragility of material. Drawing upon Hitler defining all forms of art as ‘degenerate’, Sheila’s desires to link each artwork like a memorial chain, “to mourn over and repudiate the tragedy, whilst affirming the people”.
“An Emotional Response to Terezin” has been on tour and it is a great honour to host this powerful show at Gallery150. Previously shown at: Worcester Cathedral, Cosford RAF Museum, Edinburgh Festival, Prague’s City Theatre and the Royal Academy of London.
