James Callaghan brief biography
I had no idea what to do when I left school (like so many others).
My first job was an apprentice motor mechanic, which started my
lifelong association with motor vehicles. I moved on to being a
racing mechanic for the British Racing Motors (BRM) team. I worked with two more racing teams before deciding I didn’t want to work on cars any more.
Around this time I borrowed a friends Box Brownie camera to take on holiday, it was then I fell in love with photography and decided it would be a great way to earn a living.
After much trial and error, and many ‘fill in’ jobs, such as cutting the grass for the council and working for a ‘do it yourself’
sheepskin rug company (don’t ask) I secured an office job at Jaguar Cars in Coventry. The job had nothing to do with photography, but 8 months later, I managed to transfer to the photographic department, and went straight from being an amateur to a full time professional!
During my time at Jaguar, I had considerable success entering photographic awards and competitions, 8 years later, and, after many adventures and great times, I decided to leave and take my chances as a freelance.
I decided to specialise in automotive photography and in my early
professional career most of my work involved vehicles. I have
worked with many of the large name advertising agencies and vehicle manufacturers in both worldwide locations and studio settings, spanning a career over 30 years. In later years I have been commissioned by a variety of advertising agencies for different types of products and in 2006 I had the pleasure of shooting a set of stamps for the Royal Mail to commemorate British motor sport, and in doing so managed to combine two of my greatest interests.
Photography started as a hobby and became a professional career but has always been my passion
