Paul Cuff

I started painting when I was a child, and I have never stopped. I grew up in a tiny village in Berkshire and roamed the countryside, obsessively recording places and moments of time in photographs and drawings.
I moved to Leamington after my first year at Warwick University, where I spent my working hours studying Film and my spare time painting portraits. In 2004, I received my first commission – from the owner of a country estate in Ireland. I spent two months of the summer in a small cottage overrun by mice and bats, endlessly walking amid the beautiful surroundings and working on painting after painting. It was the most creatively productive I had ever been and remains one of the happiest times of my life.
Since completing my PhD, I devote as much time as I can to painting. I am always trying to find new landscapes that speak to me. I paint the places that make me stop in my tracks, the moments that beg me to remember them. I never leave the house without a camera – there is always a corner of earth or a piece of sky that I must take back with me. Painting allows me to revisit moments when I have stood alone in nature and felt joyously lost. I hope my paintings let others share something of what I feel, and that they can see new and unknown things in the landscapes I try to capture.

Sam Partridge

I studied Art and Design for 2 years at Stratford Upon Avon College, where I discovered that I like to use inks and watercolours to produce illustrations of a fantastical nature. During this course was also when I found a love of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, when I created a series of illustrations based on the book. I think that there is a lot of imagination in the story and enjoy the idea of a world where anything is possible.

In my spare time, I continue to draw and am currently working on a canvas piece about 1m x 1m. I’m finding that I like working on a larger scale. I have another slightly unusual way of practicing drawing, which is to draw on my boyfriends back. I mainly use pen and then use felt tips or watercolours to add colour. Of course it’s a shame that I can only keep the images in the form of a photograph. On the evening of December 16th Sam will paint an image onto her boyfriends back live at Gallery150.
